There are places that, when all the libraries close,
turn on a light.

By candlelight at dawn, when you close the cover, a spirit still breathes on the page. You do not call it or summon it. It simply stays with you for a while: forever. When a book dawns beside you, it follows your path throughout your life, nourishing your essence and shaping who you are.

Those are the books that live within you, that you remember and dream of. They have a special Geist that does not die between spine and page, and often comes back to life years later.

Among all we have lived, so many things forgotten, something always makes it worthwhile: having read.

In a world so uncertain, where reality and dreams wear disguises and AI mingles with traces of what once was, reading becomes a peculiar act of rebellion. Reading at night is quiet disobedience: the world asks you to sleep, and before tomorrow comes, you choose to leave another world open among the candles.

Bookgeist is a place to keep the traces those stories leave and return to them long afterwards. A reading memory in which to write down something of what a book built with you, chapter by chapter.

I believe a personal library is more than a random collection of volumes: it is a selection built from books sought out over the years. But also from discoveries that, very often, simply happen.

Bookgeist began without my knowing it, without a name or a purpose, about 15 years ago, when I was studying Philosophy and bought my first smartphone. Suddenly, the physical and the digital began to mingle.

My reading was accompanied by a simple but faithful app that let me keep a record of the books I owned. It did not even have notes. A purely emotional connection with each book in my library.

And at that early meeting of the material and the digital, the conventional and the artistic, other things took shape too: writing a blog and printing hundreds of paper copies to hand out at university. Or printing little square photos from my Instagram, with those earliest effects, to hang on my bedroom walls.

Bringing the digital into the material world. Giving ideas permanence. Bringing thought into reality. Making the imagined tangible, and imagining the incomprehensible.

Over the past few months, I have been shaping Bookgeist continuously, trying to give all of that a form. To have my books, my reading, my notes, my quotes, and those small memories left between one page and the next in a single place. To keep reading on paper and preserve, through technology, something of the spirit of the worlds each reading creates.

To be able to return to them when I have forgotten when I read them, forgotten the notes I wrote, but not quite forgotten why.

Because reading also means leaving something of yourself between the pages. It means bringing distant spirits together through words.

I do not believe every book is sought out. And the ones that shape us most are simply found.

And Bookgeist and I have found each other.
